Setting Up the WhatsApp Business API
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's official solution for businesses that want a verified presence on WhatsApp with enterprise-grade messaging capabilities. Setting it up takes more steps than WAHA but provides a more robust and permanent connection.
Requirements
Before starting, you'll need:
- A Meta Business Manager account at business.facebook.com
- A phone number not currently registered on WhatsApp — it will be converted into a WhatsApp Business number
- Business verification documents (varies by country)
- A business website or active Facebook/Instagram Page
Your Remo account manager can guide you through the Meta verification process. Reach out to us before starting to make sure you have everything prepared.
Overview of the Setup Process
- Create or log in to your Meta Business account
- Apply for WhatsApp Business API access through the Meta Developer portal
- Verify your business — Meta reviews your information (typically 1–5 business days)
- Add and verify your phone number — you'll confirm ownership via a call or SMS
- Connect to Remo — your account manager handles the technical connection
- Create message templates for outbound and follow-up messages
Understanding Message Templates
One of the most important concepts with the Meta API is message templates.
When you want to send a message to a client who hasn't messaged you in the last 24 hours — such as a follow-up or appointment reminder — you must use a pre-approved template. Free-form messages are only allowed within the 24-hour window after a client sends you a message.
What Is a Message Template?
A template is a pre-written message format that you submit to Meta for review. Once approved, you can send it to clients with personalized content filled in (like their name or appointment time).
Examples of templates:
"Hello
{name}, your appointment at{time}on{date}is confirmed. We look forward to seeing you!"
"Hi
{name}, we noticed you were interested in{property}. Would you like to schedule a visit this week?"
Templates are reviewed by Meta and typically approved within a few hours to 2 business days.
Remo can help you create and submit message templates that comply with Meta's guidelines. Contact your account manager.
After Setup Is Complete
Once the Meta API is connected to Remo:
- The bot responds automatically to all incoming WhatsApp messages
- Follow-up messages use your approved templates when the 24-hour window has passed
- Your business number displays the official WhatsApp Business badge
- The connection never expires — no QR code rescanning needed
Meta's Conversation-Based Billing
Meta charges for WhatsApp conversations, not individual messages. A conversation is a 24-hour window that opens when a message is sent or received.
There are two types:
| Type | When It Applies | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| User-initiated | Client sends you the first message | Lower rate |
| Business-initiated | You message the client first using a template | Higher rate |
These charges are separate from your Remo subscription and billed directly by Meta. Rates vary by country. Ask your account manager for the rates applicable to your region.
