Choosing Your WhatsApp Connection
Remo supports two WhatsApp connection methods. Understanding the differences will help you choose the one that best fits your business.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | WAHA (QR Code) | WhatsApp Business API (Meta) |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Minutes | Days to weeks |
| Approval required | No | Yes — Meta business verification |
| Message limits | Based on your number's natural history | Tiered — grows as you use the platform |
| Broadcast to lists | Not supported | Supported with approved templates |
| Outbound message templates | Not required | Required for messages 24h+ after last client reply |
| Official Meta badge | No | Yes |
| Session management | Requires periodic QR re-scan | Always active, no re-scan needed |
| Best for | Quick start, inbound-heavy use | High-volume outbound, enterprise use |
WAHA (QR Code Connection)
WAHA is a WhatsApp automation layer that works by connecting your existing WhatsApp account to Remo via a QR code scan — similar to how WhatsApp Web works on your browser.
How It Works
- You open the WAHA settings in your Remo dashboard
- A QR code is displayed on screen
- You scan it with the WhatsApp app on your phone
- The bot is now connected and responds to all incoming messages
Advantages
- No setup complexity — ready in minutes with no approval process
- No Meta approval — start immediately
- Free messaging — no per-conversation fees from Meta
- Works with your existing number — no need to acquire a new phone number
Limitations
WAHA Limitations
- No official Meta certification — your number will not show a green verified badge
- Requires periodic re-authentication — if the session expires you'll need to scan the QR code again
- One number per session — one WhatsApp account per WAHA connection
- Not suitable for bulk broadcasts — not designed for mass outbound marketing campaigns
- Phone must stay connected — the smartphone with your WhatsApp account should maintain internet access
WhatsApp Business API (Meta)
The official WhatsApp Business API is provided directly by Meta. It gives you a verified business presence on WhatsApp and access to enterprise messaging features.
How It Works
- You apply for a WhatsApp Business Account through Meta
- Meta verifies your business identity (typically takes a few days)
- Your number is provisioned as an official WhatsApp Business number
- Remo connects to the Meta API on your behalf — your account manager handles this step
Advantages
- Official Meta certification — your business receives a verified badge visible to all clients
- Always-active connection — no session expiry, no QR code rescanning
- Template messages — send pre-approved messages to clients at any time
- Scalable message limits — limits increase automatically as your account matures
- Enterprise reliability — backed by Meta's infrastructure
Limitations
Meta API Limitations
- Template approval required — any outbound message sent more than 24 hours after the client's last message must use a pre-approved message template
- Approval process — getting your business verified can take several days to a couple of weeks
- Per-conversation cost — Meta charges a small fee per conversation (separate from your Remo subscription)
- Dedicated number — the number used for the API cannot simultaneously be used on the regular WhatsApp app
Which Should You Choose?
| If you... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Want to get started today with no waiting | WAHA |
| Already have an active WhatsApp number your clients know | WAHA |
| Need the official Meta-verified badge on your business | Meta API |
| Plan to send broadcast campaigns to opt-in lists | Meta API |
| Are a large-scale operation requiring guaranteed uptime | Meta API |
Most businesses start with WAHA and move to the Meta API if they later need broadcast capabilities or the verified business badge.
